Storyboard

For the final project I will be focusing on the upcoming holiday season and how things are changing all around us, from houses being decorated in my neighborhood and surrounding neighborhoods becuaes people tend to start early in my town. To go along with this I will also be mentioning the upcoming winter season and how it compares to other winters in the past, especially last year where we had a lot of snow.

Top:

For the storyboard the components that it will have include why the story is important, this story is important because it will its something that everyone sees whether they celebrate the holiday or not. The upcoming winter season will effect us all because it can determine whether or not we will have school or be able to drive, even though it might not seem relevant the upcoming holiday season   will continue to be effected by the economy.

Middle:

The middle of my storyboard will include my photo slideshow, it will have several pictures of houses being decorated and other assorted decorations around that will be related to my topic. Its significant to include a slideshow because it will tell everyone where things are happening and they will get a better sense of the story, pictures help to bring emotion and relevance to the story.

Left Side:

I will include a video which is another one of my media elements besides the slideshow, the video will show action by looking around at neighborhood. The video will be able to show where the story will be taking place, the people viewing the video will be able to see the locations that I am talking about and the decorations as well.

Right Side:

I will include a weather map of Connecticut that will go along with the text at the bottom, this is important because it will be another visual component to the story.  I might be able to find the map on a website that explains winter weather patterns in the country and the state, weather will be an important component to my story besides the holiday decorating.

Bottom:

At the bottom I will include text about the history of weather patterns in Connecticut, with the text I will be able to describe and explain about the weather form the past. To find this information I will have to look up on websites or look at info-graphics about weather during the holiday season because not every year the weather is the same.

Organization:

I will organize my project this way because I think that it will be the best way to make sure that everything will be seen and understood, its important to make sure that everything is included that is significant to the project.

Final Project Topic

For the final project topic I will be focusing on the upcoming holiday season and how towns and cities are changing their downtowns to make it look more like Christmas. With all of the holiday craft fairs coming up and the holiday shopping it should be easy to see the changing decorations everywhere that you look so it will be easy to include media elements in this story to make it a complete project.

For the media elements, I plan on doing a video as well as a photo slideshow to show how the towns are changing during the holiday season, I might also use other elements to get a better focus on the topic.

Podcast Critique

The podcast that I listened to for extra credit was an interview from 2008 presented by Paranormal Underground featuring the investigators from the Travel Channel show Ghost Adventures, Zak Bagans, Nick Groff and Aaron Goodwin. They were interviewed by Karen Frazier and Cheryl Knight, they questioned the Ghost Adventures Crew (GAC) about what was upcoming on the show for investigations and what to expect in the next season which at that time was season 3. They also asked about the Halloween special that was coming up at the time, their experiences with possession during different lockdowns, ending the Podcast they answered questions that were submitted.

Overall, I really enjoyed the Podcast being a big fan of the show and long time believer of the paranormal, the interviewers did a good job with the questions and keeping it interesting. What I really loved about the Podcast is that they actually talked about being a jouranlist is part of being a paranormal investigator because that is exactly what I want to do when I graduate SCSU. Even though the Podcast was long at 51 minutes it was very interesting and kept a good system with answering and asking questions and all the guys were able to answer questions and tell their experiences.

Trend Story

The holidays are coming, and we’ve all got those lists a mile long of presents that we want and people that we have to buy for, but in the tough economic times retail sales could easily take hits that the companies don’t really need.

Locally it seems like the trend is that people are spending less money on items that are not as important and they are not shopping in stores as much. Typically it seems like more people are shopping online because they are given incentives like free shipping or other discounts.

Using the Google data visualize chart it’s easy to see that by looking at trends that retail sales which include food dipped around certain months in 2008 where numbers were around 350 billion dollars. Looking at just retail sales, during the years of the recessions the numbers dipped in 2008, but they have risen slightly in the years after that. It seems that every year there is a trend that sales is following by dipping slightly in the fall and then going up in the winter months because of the holiday shopping.

Susan Kurty, a frequent retail shopper believes that the recession and economy problems have clearly affected retail sales.

“Yes, it has,” she said. “For example stores are offering more discounts and coupons.”

As holidays sneak up on us, many people will be following the common and easy trend of buying simple items and trying to shop smarter Kurty believes.

“More people will be purchasing gift cards online instead of going into stores.”

Well known stores like Target and Macy’s are starting to announce that they will be opening on Thanksgiving night at midnight to allow shoppers to get a jump start on  deals, Kurty believes that other stores will be following the trend.

“With very limited budgets for families people will try to get the best bargain for the limited amount of money that they have to spend.”

Although many people would easily be swayed the Black Friday sales on televisions, computers and other miscellaneous items, Kurty will not be awake when others are fighting for these deals

“The specials they offer will be in limited quantities and it’s not worth me getting up early to take advantage of an item I don’t want or need.

With the infamous shopping days upon us time will only tell what really will happen with retail sales and if companies will be will able make their numbers and if these numbers will stay on trend.

Forbes Article Response

The Forbes article about infographics was an interesting look at the future of the journalism field because nowadays it’s a lot more
than words on a piece of paper.

I think that the article told a good story with a lot of different types of information and you got to read about a real person in the field and what they did and how they bring data to life. By placing the information that he had gathered into the article was a nice touch because I was able to see what he was talking about and look at the numbers myself.

Overall, I found the article interesting because it talked about something that we all can relate to and we will all have to learn about eventually especially going into the journalism field.
